First of all I have to preface this post by saying that we will forever remain loyal to and in deep gratitude of Sushi Spring Time in our hometown, Aarhus. Son (the owner) serves the best sushi we have had anywhere outside of Japan, and we are deeply honoured to be on a first-name basis with this true maki-magician*.
BUT that being said, a girl’s gotta eat (sushi) and travelling 1500km for one meal seems excessive, even for us. Luckily, yesterday, we found ‘Suvi‘, a local joint which serves sushi that is (almost) on par with Son’s sashimi.
As per usual, we started out with the miso. I love miso, and in my experience it is often a good indicator of the quality of what’s to come. If done right, the initial whiff of a bowl of miso has the potential to bring me right back to a Japanese mountainside in the flash of a moment. This one did not disappoint.

For the main course we opted for a chef’s menu and added some tempura kingcrab maki and otoro (fatty tuna) sashimi on the side. All of it was delicious, fresh and beautifully presented. And even though I would much rather have sushi that is high quality and plain looking, we agreed that the decorations added at Suvi all contributed with good additions in terms of flavours and textures.
The only negative we found was that the sushi rice was somehow not quite right. It was like it had been lying around for too long, getting a little gooey. However, the offence was not serious enough to take away from the general expression, which is that this place serves some seriously good sushi.
So if you are in Tromsø and craving some good asian cuisine, definitely check out Suvi. It’s a fusion restaurant, so if you are not into sushi you will have plenty of other delicious looking items to choose from. And not that you need an excuse, but we did hear that fatty fish is an excellent source of vitamin D during those dark polar nights.
I am of course exaggerating here to make a point, but theres also an element of truth to this. Last time I was in Tromsø and Jonas and I lived apart for 5 months, going to Sushi Spring Time without me was literally the only thing off limits. You don’t fuck around with good sushi, folks.
