Day 10: Good-looking Skinheads Live on top of the Mountain

Steps: 35.028 (26,5km)

Temples: 20 + 21 + 22

We slept like babies at minshuku Kakufūtei and woke up well rested to head out the door by sunrise at 6.30.

Morning send off by our wonderful hosts

Last night our hostess made us a delicious dinner, and while we ate, we communicated with our host via google translate, which only made his mischievous remarks funnier. “Did you run out of paper with the skinheads?” The phone read aloud while he gestured smilingly at Jonas’ bald head. We talked about religion and he warned us (again, jokingly) that we shouldn’t get in with the monks, because they taught you weird things.

He also told us that he was friends with the main priest at temple 20, whom he said was very good looking, so we should be careful (and maybe send him a picture once we got there). I laughed heartedly and told Jonas that yes, if he wasn’t careful I might replace him with another good-looking skinhead.

When we got to temple 20 by early morning there was no one else there but an older lady sweeping the courtyard – we seemed to be the first henrōs to arrive.

It wasn’t until after we left that it dawned on us that *she* was probably the good looking main priest our host had been talking about the night before 😂

From there on it was straight back down to cross the river at the bottom and then straight back up again to temple 21.

Our legs are getting stronger and by 11.45 we had climbed two mountains and it was time for some breakfast onigiri (lovingly prepared by our hostess early in the morning)

One last little climb and descend let us to temple 22, close to where we are staying the night. Feet and legs are tired but we made it and right now new friends are helping us book accommodation for Monday over the phone 🙏
