Steps: 21.505 (17,5km)
Temples: None (but we did have breakfast at a small shrine which was somehow related to temple 22…)
Today has been the first day without any temples. The route from no 22 to 23 is only around 20 kilometers if you follow the main road, but knowing that we were going to be tired after yesterdays mountain pass and wanting to avoid the big roads and tunnels, we opted instead for one of the many alternative routes that are a little longer but more scenic.
The trip took us along the historic route over Kaitani and Matsuzaka pass, which led us past the most amazing viewpoint, where some Japanese mastermind had had the good sense to hang up a swing – and honestly what more do you need in life?
The coinciding of it being the warmest day on the trip so far, and us having planned a short day which ended at the beach seemed like fate, so even though the water was a little cold I wouldn’t dare spite the gods by not going in (Jonas took his chances and only went in to the knees)
The rest of the afternoon was spent reading, relaxing and – most importantly – washing and drying our pants, which have accumulated quite the layers of filth over the last 150+ kilometers …
