Day 17: Wet Marshmallows

Steps: 30.317 (22,5km)

Temples: 26

Today started with an easy one kilometer hike up to temple 26, where we lit a candle and some incense for Jonas’ grandma, who’s currently in the hospital back home.

Once back down on the other side, we decided to eat our breakfast bentos before the rain set in. My appetite still low, I have resolved to eating like a toddler – stale salt crackers, sugary bread and flavorless rice is a far cry from what I usually enjoy, but at this point I figure it’s better to get the calories in than be adamant about nutritional composition.

Around 10.00 the rain set in and we pulled out our rain ponchos. To my great delight Jonas has decided to bring one that is bright orange (to match all his other clothes). If nothing else it does lift your spirits significantly on a rainy day when you look over and see a mixture of a Teletubby and a marshmallow trotting along beside you.

Other than that it was a lot of yeah … walking in the rain. Nothing else to it than popping in some good music or and audiobook and enjoy the asceticism I suppose (also our shoes aren’t water proof so after about an hour our feet were squelching with every step. And that point you might as well give up and start jumping in puddles, and so I did).

The rain also had its upsides, however. On the way up over Cape Hane we suddenly spotted a crab on the road. “How did you get all the way up here?” I asked, amused, gazing at the ocean which lay at least 400m away and 40m below us.

As we started looking around we discovered the little white crabs were everywhere – crawling across and along the path and down the sides of the cliff. They were extremely cute, and we probably wouldn’t have seen them out on a sunny day.

It is customary to wash off your staff before settling in for the night and so many hotels provide water and towels outside for pilgrims to use on arrival

We arrived at our hotel early, where there is both an onsen and a restaurant so no need to go outside again before the rain stops tomorrow 😊
