Day 24: Snakes and Lizards

Steps: 26.119 (22,5km)

Temples: 36

A cloudy, humid morning turned into a beautiful sunny day, as we climbed from Tosa through the forest via the Shōryūji trail, to arrive at Usa bay on the other side. The trail featured many small waterfalls and our very first snake spotting!

*slithering in Japanese*

Once at the bay, we left our backpacks at a Family Mart to make a round trip to temple 36, which lies at the tip of a small peninsula. On the way out we met a henrō from yesterday who was using a free public foot onsen at a hotel while he was waiting for the bus.

Why is this not a thing in Denmark? 😫

At temple 36 we met some cyclists who were on a group trip around the island. One of them turned out to be Danish, and we had a nice chat about his work which has allowed him to live part time in Hawaii.

Since we weren’t going far today we had plenty of time to take lunch at a restaurant and still arrive an hour early at our minshoku. While we waited to get in we sat reading in the shadow and watched as the local cat, Jasmine, caught and tortured a poor lizard, which caused it to drop its tail.

Not the unlucky lizard but a close cousin

Like a severed chickens body, it (the tail) lay wriggling in the grass for several minutes before finally admitting defeat. With live action scenes like this, who needs the BBC?

At dinner we sat talking to the one other henrō who is staying here. Turns out he owns three very high end sushi restaurants in Tokyo and said he could get us a reservation for when we get up there in May! So now we have something else to look forward to besides temple 88 ☺️
