Another day of sleeping in until 8, to let the worst of the rain fizzle out. On the way out the door we met the smallest henrō, eight-year-old Aita and his dad, who are doing the Kochi section together. Quite impressive for an eight-year-old, and even more so considering that his backpack-to-body ratio was roughly 1:2.

We waved goodbye to them and set off towards Naka-Tosa where you can choose between two different roads – the Ōsaka trail or the Soemimizu trail. The Osaka trail featured both a food market and a cherry blossom section, so it seemed like a no-brainer…
After the cherry blossoms came the Nanako pass, which was one of the steepest climbs we have had to date. Much chocolate munching followed.
We arrived at our guesthouse around 17, and felt like we had done pretty well for ourselves, with 30+ kilometers and two mountain passes.
… That is until we met our roommate Sam-san, from Australia, who has just taken a day off from the pilgrimage to run a marathon!
And then, only an hour later, our little henrō from this morning and his dad walked in the door – I imagine he must have taken at least double the amount of steps as us to get here and he wasn’t the least bit tired and has been running around entertaining us all all evening 😅
