Day 63: Clear Skies and Filthy Carpets

Steps: 28.469 (26,8km)

Temples: 52 + 53

Beautiful sunny day today, where we walked north out of Matsuyama towards temples 52.

On our way onwards towards temple 53, we had just started looking around for places to eat, when a man waved us over. Turns out the local community center were offering free curries for pilgrims as osettai – perfect timing!

An old town house decorated with flowers caught our eye as we walked by. A sign said “grand opening” and as we popped our heads in, we discovered the 100-year old house had been newly renovated and opened up as a small cafe.

Not really knowing what we were buying, we ordered two ice desserts with strawberry and kiwi, and ended up getting a giant mountain of food each.

We ended the day back by the sea. It felt good to see the water again and feel the fresh air, and it made us reminiscent of the early days of walking in Kochi – how far we have come since then!

By late afternoon, tired and ready to relax, we hopped on a train back to Matsuyama to check into our new hotel. However, to our great dismay the room they gave us turned out to be extremely dirty.

Normally I’m not super delicate about these things. We have stayed in some seriously dingy places during this trip, and that is fine when you’re only there for one night and paying 8000¥ in total.

But this place is not cheap, we’re staying here for five consecutive nights and have explicitly been told there will be no room cleaning during that time (don’t know if it’s a golden week thing?)

So yeah, I went down to the lobby and asked them nicely to either clean the room or give us another one. The poor trainee behind the counter quickly offered us another room – which turned out to be just as dirty and had a funky smell to boot.

Exasperated I asked if we could just have some cleaning supplies instead, and we then proceeded to clean our own room for an hour – though there was no way of getting all the dirt and filth out of the carpet.

Super annoying, but it’s not like we really have a chance to get somewhere else to stay during golden week, so we will just have to try and stay outside as much as possible…

Also, the view is really nice, so that’s something I guess
